DANCE BATTLES
IN AUSTIN

Friendly Hip Hop battles and cyphers honoring the original spirit of the culture. Expression, community, and craft — not trophies. Open to all skill levels and styles.

UPCOMING BATTLES

What’s Coming Up

Battles drop quarterly — sometimes more often when the Austin dance scene calls for it. The next confirmed battle lands in the panel below as soon as the date is set. Walk-ins are welcome to cypher; bracket spots need to be registered in advance.

THE TRADITION

Battles as Hip Hop Tradition

Battles aren’t a tournament. They’re one of the original languages of Hip Hop — born in the Bronx in the 1970s, when b-boys, b-girls, MCs, and DJs would pull up at block parties and trade rounds in a cypher. The point was never the trophy. It was the dialogue.

At Danzversity, we host battles the way the culture intended: a circle, a beat, two dancers (or two crews) trading rounds, judges from the community responding to craft and originality, and a room full of people honoring whoever stepped in. The format is structured but the energy stays open. Cyphers run before, during, and after the bracket so anyone in the room can find a moment to express.

“Dance to express, not impress.”

— Jaymie Howard, Co-founder & Creative Director

That’s the whole frame. We’re not running a competition circuit. We’re hosting a cultural event — a place where Austin’s Hip Hop and street dance community can sharpen, support each other, and keep the tradition alive. Beginners are welcome to step in. The room will hold you.

Battles happen roughly quarterly, tied to the Austin dance scene calendar. Some events are all-styles open; some are style-specific (breakin’-only, popping-only). All of them are about the cypher first, the bracket second, and the recognition third.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A Battle Night From the Floor

Six things every battle night holds, regardless of style or format.

The Cypher

The circle is the foundation of the night. It opens the event, runs between bracket rounds, and closes the show. Anyone can step in — that’s the rule. The energy in the cypher tells you what kind of night it’s going to be.

The Witnesses

Three judges from the Austin Hip Hop and street dance community sit at the table. They’re not scoring on choreography — they’re responding to craft, originality, musicality, and how dancers answer each other’s rounds. The judges introduce themselves at the start so you know whose eye is on the room.

The Crowd

The room is part of the energy. Reactions, calls, and noise are the soundtrack of any cypher — without the crowd, there’s no battle. Bring your friends, bring your voice, hype the dancers who step in.

The Beginner Welcome

You don’t need to be advanced to cypher. You don’t need to be advanced to register for a bracket. The room is built to hold first-timers as much as veterans. The point is showing up.

The Culture

Every battle opens with a brief acknowledgment of the lineage — the originators of the form, the dancers who carried it forward, the elements that make Hip Hop more than a style. Knowledge is part of the dance.

The Honor

Whoever advances through the bracket gets community recognition, sometimes a small cash prize or studio credit, and the respect of the room. We’re here for honor over trophies. The respect is what lasts.

BATTLE FORMATS

How Each Battle Runs

We rotate formats based on the event — sometimes 1v1, sometimes crew, sometimes all-styles cypher only. The specific format for each upcoming battle is on the registration page.

FORMATHOW IT WORKS
1v1 (One on One)Two dancers, best of three rounds. Bracket of 8 or 16 dancers depending on registration. Most common format for our quarterly events.
2v2 / CrewTwo-dancer or three-dancer crews face off across multiple rounds. Crews can be pre-formed or assembled at the event from solo registrations.
All-Styles CypherNo bracket, no winners. Just the open circle running for an hour or two. Anyone can step in. Lowest-stakes way to experience battle culture.
Style-SpecificSome events are dedicated to one style — a breakin’-only night, a popping circle, a locking session. Style is announced in advance.
Round StructureEach round is one music selection (DJ’s call), 30–60 seconds per dancer. Best of 3 rounds for 1v1, longer formats for crew battles.

QUESTIONS

Before You Step In

Quick answers for first-time battlers and cyphers. If your question isn’t here, email dance@danzversity.com.

What’s a dance battle and what’s a cypher?

A cypher is the open circle — dancers take turns going in, the rest watch and react. A battle is the structured version: two dancers (or two crews) trade rounds and a panel of community judges responds based on craft, originality, and how well each dancer answers the other. Cyphers are the foundation; battles are how the form gets sharper.

Do I need to be advanced to battle?

No. We welcome all skill levels — first-time cypher dancers as much as veterans. The energy isn’t about being the best in the room; it’s about showing up, expressing what you’ve got, and respecting whoever steps in next. Beginners often surprise themselves once the music drops.

What styles are welcome at Danzversity battles?

All Hip Hop and street dance styles — Hip Hop, breakin’, popping, locking, house, freestyle, and any cross-styles you bring. Most events are all-styles format so anyone can step into the cypher. Some battles are style-specific (a breakin’-only night, a popping-only round) — those are announced in advance.

Are there age restrictions?

Most battle events are all-ages and family-friendly. Youth dancers (10+) often participate in their own bracket or alongside adults if they’re ready. A few events are 18+ — those are clearly labeled. Check the upcoming events panel for the specific age policy of the next battle.

How do I register or sign up to battle?

Each event has a registration page that opens a couple weeks before the battle date. You sign up for one of the bracket spots (usually 8 or 16 dancers per bracket) or you can come watch and jump into the open cypher portion. Walk-ins are welcome to cypher; battle brackets need to be registered.

What’s the format of a typical battle event?

Most events run roughly: open cypher to start, judge introductions, bracket battles (1v1 or 2v2 depending on the event, usually best-of-3 rounds), final round with the two top dancers, then open cypher to close. The whole thing typically runs 2–3 hours.

Are there prizes?

Recognition over trophies. The dancer who advances through the bracket gets community recognition, sometimes a small cash prize or studio credit, and (most importantly) the respect of the room. We’re not running a competition circuit — we’re hosting a cultural event. Honor is the prize.

When are Dance Battles held?
