ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Toddler Dance Classes for Ages 2–4 in Austin

Root Runners is the first rung on the Danzversity youth ladder — and the only one where you’re on the floor too. It’s a Grown-Up & Me class, which means a parent, grandparent, or caregiver dances alongside their kid for the full 45 minutes.

Two-, three-, and four-year-olds don’t learn choreography — they learn how their bodies work. A Root Runners class at our Austin studio (7531 Burnet Rd, in the Crestview / North Austin area) is built around that: scarves and props to chase, stop-and-go games that teach listening, marching and stomping that build balance, and short bursts of free movement where a toddler gets to decide what happens next. If it looks like play, that’s because play is how this age group learns.

The class is built on the Elemental Dance Method™ — Danzversity’s curriculum that breaks hip hop into four elements (Earth, Air, Water, Fire). Root Runners lives almost entirely in Earth: groove, weight, rhythm, and body awareness. Your kid isn’t learning steps yet. They’re learning to feel a beat, to move on purpose, and to be comfortable in a room full of music and other people.

Why a grown-up dances too. At this age a caregiver in the room isn’t a safety net, it’s the teaching tool. Toddlers mirror the adult they trust before they’ll mirror a teacher. When you do the movement, your kid does the movement — and the 45 minutes becomes something you did together rather than something you watched. No dance experience required, and nobody is looking at you.

Classes meet Saturdays from 10:00 to 10:45 AM, once a week, for $100/month on a month-to-month subscription you can cancel any time from your portal. Forty-five minutes is deliberate — it’s about the ceiling of a two-year-old’s attention, and Saturday morning means it doesn’t fight naps or daycare pickup.

Culture, not competition. Hip hop is a culture before it’s a dance style — born in the Bronx in 1973, carried by communities of color, built on self-expression and respect. We don’t water that down for toddlers; we start it early. Root Runners kids grow into Flow Finders at five, and the through-line from a scarf game at two to a cypher at fifteen is the same method the whole way up.

Common Questions

What ages are Root Runners for?
Root Runners is our parent-and-me class for toddlers ages 2 to 4. It's the first age group in the Danzversity youth ladder — kids move up to Flow Finders (5–7) when they're ready to take class on their own.
Does a parent have to stay in class?
Yes — and not just stay, but dance. Root Runners is a Grown-Up & Me class, so a parent, grandparent, or caregiver is on the floor for the full 45 minutes. At this age toddlers mirror the adult they trust before they'll mirror a teacher, so the grown-up is part of how the class works. No dance experience needed.
When does Root Runners meet?
Saturdays from 10:00 to 10:45 AM at the Danzversity studio, 7531 Burnet Rd, Austin TX 78757. Free parking out front.
How much does Root Runners cost?
$100/month, once weekly, on a month-to-month subscription you can cancel any time through the student portal. Your first class is free, and enrolling never charges your card before that first class.
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes — your kid's first class is on us. Head to the homepage and tap FREE TRIAL to pick your Saturday. No card, no commitment.
My two-year-old has never done a class before. Is that OK?
That's exactly who this is for. Root Runners is most kids' first structured anything — we expect wandering, sitting out, and the occasional meltdown, and none of it is a problem. The class is built to absorb it.
What should we wear?
Mandatory dress code, for your kid and for you: t-shirt + sweatpants or comfortable pants + sneakers or bare feet. Not allowed: dresses, skirts, shorts, crop tops, or open-toed shoes — floor time needs clothes that move and cover. It's one dress code across every Danzversity kids' program. Approved picks: toddler pants (2–6) and Danzversity tees in little kids sizes.
Can I bring a younger sibling?
A baby in a carrier is fine. A walking sibling under 2 usually isn't — the room is built for one grown-up per dancing toddler, and a loose younger sibling ends up being a second kid you're managing instead of dancing. Ask us and we'll help you sort it out.
