What Is a Cypher?
A cypher is a circle. A hip-hop tradition. Dancers gather around an open floor, music drives the energy, and people take turns stepping into the middle — sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for a full song. Everyone else holds the bounce, claps, and hypes the dancer in the center.
It’s not a battle. It’s not a performance. It’s a supportive room. Beginners and veterans share the same circle. No judges. No scores. The only thing asked of you is your presence — show up, bring your bounce, support whoever’s in the middle, take your turn when you feel ready.
Cyphers started in the South Bronx in the 1970s — block parties, basements, schoolyards — and they’re still the heart of hip-hop dance today. Off The Grid is Danzversity’s monthly cypher.
THE DESTINATION
A Destination of Its Own
Off The Grid is Danzversity’s monthly all-ages cypher event — the destination of the Cypher Track. After Learn to Dance and The Session, the circle is where your practice shows up.
This is not a class. This is not a showcase. This is a cypher. A circle where dancers take turns, where music drives the energy, and where the community is built one round at a time.
Off The Grid is one of the two destinations of the adult journey. The other is the Team Track via audition. Both paths matter. Both are honored.
THE PAYOFF
Where the Work Pays Off
Not every dancer wants to perform on a stage. Some want the circle. Off The Grid is the goal at the end of the Cypher Track — the monthly room where Learn to Dance and The Session come together.
Auditions and showcases live on the Team Track. The circle lives here. Both matter.
Off The Grid is for the dancer who wants:

HOW IT WORKS
Inside the Circle
Monthly cypher event. All ages welcome. Cypher-style, MC-led, music-driven. Beginners hold the anchor; advanced dancers layer complexity. Everyone’s on the same beat.
